ABOUT ME
Hi! I'm Jennifer Tobin, a.k.a Ms. Misfit - I love the outdoors and adventuring. For a long time, I placed a lot of self-imposed limitations on myself and what adventures I'd undertake because I'm fat and a whole slew of other reasons. Then I suffered a back injury that actually did physically limit me. I yearned to do the things I once did, and things I'd never done before.
So I said screw it and started figuring out what worked for me.
In the course of my journey I've noticed a significant lack of diversity and inclusion in my outdoor adventuring. In most of my endeavors, I realized I stuck out like a sore, fat pride-filled thumb. A misfit. And I wasn't always welcomed.
So I set out to change that through education and active advocacy via group adventuring/lectures/etc. This led to the founding of Misfit Hikers & Adventuring, Co., a place that seeks to inform and welcomes everyone to the adventuring community, regardless of age, race, culture, creed, sexual choice/orientation, weight, etc.
And I am no longer apologetic for my body or my advocacy.
I've been hiking for over 20 years, though only intensely for the past year. For me, it isn’t about the adrenaline of said adventure, but the unexpectedness of it. The story behind it. Every hike and adventure is a chance to learn something about myself, my companions, or world itself. It’s given me a deep appreciation of humanity and our responsibility as stewards of the natural world.
This blog seemed a good way to combine the stories I want to tell and my advocacy efforts.
So, hi.
